What we do

Lime is key industrial material produced from limestone. It is used in everything from the production of building materials and steel to refining sugar and helping to purify drinking water. Lime cannot be produced without creating carbon dioxide (CO2). As a result, large amounts of CO2 are released into the air each year. Recognising the need to reduce these emissions, Origen is working with the lime industry to develop technologies to create zero-carbon lime. This zero-carbon lime can be used to capture point-source emissions from a range of other industries and to remove CO2 directly from the atmosphere.

How it works

Lime will naturally react with carbon dioxide, making it an ideal tool for capturing CO2 from industrial processes and the atmosphere itself.

However, existing lime production processes create millions of tons of carbon dioxide emissions – rendering lime ineffective for carbon dioxide removal.

Origen has developed a lime kiln – based on a novel calciner technology that is able to separate CO2 efficiently during the lime production process.

Limestone (calcium carbonate) is broken down at high temperatures (1000°C) in an oxygen-rich environment to produce zero-carbon lime and pure carbon dioxide. The CO2 can then either be sold for industrial uses or stored permanently underground.

Our zero-carbon lime can be produced cost-effectively and at scale – both vital to enable widespread adoption for existing lime users.

There is also huge potential to deploy zero-carbon lime to clean up other industrial processes and to capture CO2 from the atmosphere.

Ben Turner


Ben joined Origen in 2019 after a successful career in investment banking with UBS and Adelphi Capital. He is responsible for leading the business, developing the strategy and has a focus on the commercialisation of the technology.

Tim Kruger


Tim is a cleantech entrepreneur and recognized authority on removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Alongside his work at Origen, Tim runs an initiative at the University of Oxford exploring technologies to counter the threat of climate change.

Georgina McNee


Georgie worked at PwC in London for 6 years in Transaction Services and Debt Advisory. She has also worked in In-house M&A at Interserve and Caltex and sits on the Business Angel Committee for The British Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong.

Dustin Pool

Chief Business Development Officer

Dustin brings global experience in engineering, operations, strategy and financial analysis. He holds a B.S. in Petroleum Engineering from the University of Texas and an MBA from Columbia Business School. Dustin heads up Origen’s Strategy and Business Development in North America.

Alan Rezigh

Executive VP of Strategic Business

Alan brings 35 years’ experience in technology and business development and carbon dioxide storage. He holds a Master’s in Petroleum Engineering and has studied Economics and Environmental Sustainability at the London School of Economics and Stanford University.

Barrie has over 50 years’ experience of project management, design, and delivery to a wide range of process and power industries. Barrie has a doctorate in Chemical Engineering from The University of Surrey and has literally written the book on kiln design: Industrial and Process Furnaces (Mullinger & Jenkins).

Christine has a strong scientific background in Computational Fluid Dynamics [CFD] modelling, with 30 years of experience at companies such as Blue Circle Industries, Lafarge and Total. She is responsible for the development and scale-up of Origen’s calcination technology.

Jamie Steel

Project Engineer

With a Master’s Degree in Chemical Engineering and a solid work history in the cement and lime industries, Jamie’s role is crucial to the efficiency of the day to day running of our On-site projects in order that they complete to cost, budget and time.

Kevin Webber

Project Manager

Kevin spent the last 13 years providing senior level Project Management and Marketing Consultancy to clients across a wide range of UK industries.  Kevin leads both our internal and external projects to ensure consistency of approach and service across Origen’s activities.

Georgia Thorley

General Counsel

Georgia brings over 12 years’ legal experience from international law firms including Allen & Overy and Bird & Bird. She also has experience in sustainable agriculture and sustainable business. Georgia takes care of Origen’s legal and regulatory affairs.

Jayne Shufflebotham

Communications Coordinator

Jayne has over 34 years experience in Administration across many sectors both in the private and public sector.  Jayne helps the Team in day to day activities and is also assisting in formulating and taking action on Origen’s Communication Plans.
